Pictured is a Japanese cypress sculpture of Yakushi Nyorai, the Buddha of Healing, on display in the Dallas Museum of Art in Dallas, Texas. It was created about 1150, during the Heian period. In Japan, believers call upon Yakushi for spiritual and physical healing, protection during childbirth, to extinguish malevolent spirits, and to obtain rebirth in the heavenly realm of Western Paradise.
