Hundreds of Israeli Jewish women, joined by Arabs and sympathizing Europeans protest the occupation of Gaza and the West Bank by Israel as they march down Jaffa Street in the heart of Jerusalem. The soldiers are wary of potentially violent troublemakers trying to interrupt the demonstration. The so-called Intifada, or Arab uprising, began in December of 1987. Over time, many, particularly on the political left, and of the peace movement, turned their energies to moving the nation's leadership in this direction. The first intifada disappeared by 1993 when the Oslo Peace Accord was announced.
