Italian World War two prisoners lead by Domenico Chiocchetti were given permission by the camp commandant to convert two Nissan huts into a chapel and a school. Using limited materials, they transformed the inside into what is now an elaborate place of worship that has endured the decades and become a source of pride for local residents and the many tourists from across the world who visit each year.
