In the highest part of the city, the Moors built the fortress that served as a defensive bastion for the Nasrid kingdom of Granada. Today you can still see the remains of the walls and some towers. In 1507, the Catholic monarchs ordered a temple to be built on the remains of the Moorish fortress. The temple, now known as Iglesia de La Villa Church of La Villa, has a rectangular shape, sculptures of angels, a large vault and three chapels.
