Ice Lanterns are actually ice sculptures. It started when people placed ice blocks together, kept oil lamps inside and left outside their houses for relatives to find the way home.In Northern China, this has a long history as early as 200BC. Later on, artists were inspired to make castles, sliders, flowers out of ice. HaErBin has a Ice Lantern Festival every year.
