Another reason why Thingvellir National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site is its stunning geological composition. Thingvellir is one of the few places on the planet where it is possible to see the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates exposed from the ground. The only other place where such a thing can be observed is the Great Rift Valley in East Africa.
