Born Sarah Breedlove, Charles Joseph Walker was her third husband, and although she divorced him also, it was from this marriage she became known as Madam C J Walker. Sarah herself had problems with her own hair, and since her own brothers were already barbers, she learned about proper hair care products from them. Later, Sarah was working as an agent for Annie Malone, another African American of hair and skin care products, for the African American community. Although there were other African American woman millionaires, including Annie Malone, Sarah is the one who is best documented to being the first. And like Annie, she gave back to her community. Because of the racism of the times, there was no place for African American woman to congregate, like a `Y`. The Chinese and Japanese in San Francisco had their own, so, Sarahs home, this home, became a defacto `Y` for the African American woman at the time. As seen 20 January 2023.
