Located 4 miles (6 km) from Teldeniya and 130 miles (209 km) upstream of the mouth of the Mahaweli River lies the arch-shaped Victoria Dam. Her Majesty, Queen Victoria, Empress of the British Empire, is honored by its name. Its primary uses are for hydroelectric power generation and irrigation. The greatest hydroelectric power station in Sri Lanka, with a capacity of 210 MW, is supported by this dam, which is the highest on the island nation. Under the direction of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, the dam's construction began in 1978. It was finished under the administration of President Junius Richard Jayewardene, and Margaret Thatcher, the British Prime Minister, officially opened it.
