Grey heron perched on rails on a disused oil transfer jetty in Barataria Bayou. The grey heron is a long-legged predatory wading bird of the heron family, Ardeidae, native throughout temperate Europe and Asia and also parts of Africa. It is resident in much of its range, but some populations from the more northern parts migrate southwards in autumn. Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve protects the natural and cultural resources of Louisiana`s Mississippi River Delta region. It is named after French pirate Jean Lafitte and consists of six separate sites and a park headquarters
