Pictured is a green heron looking for food as it stands in shallow water under a cluster of rocks on the shore of Chokoloskee Bay in Florida. The binomial name is Butorides virescens. Green herons are one if a few species of birds known to use tools. They commonly use bread crusts, insects, or other items as bait. They drop the bait on the surface of the water and to lure fish. When the fish takes the bait, the green heron grabs and eats the fish. Roughly 10 miles long and 2 miles wide, Chokoloskee Bay is located along Florida’s Gulf Coast and is separated from the Gulf of Mexico by the Ten Thousand Islands.
