Buckwheat, Fagopyrum esculentum or common buckwheat, is a plant cultivated for its grain-like seeds and as a cover crop. Buckwheat is a short-season crop that grows well in low-fertility or acidic soils. The buckwheat plant has a branching root system with a primary taproot that reaches deeply into moist soil. That is why buckwheat is also excellent as a green crop. Buckwheat is also an excellent pasture for bees.
