The Grand Saint Bernard pass (2469) is the most famous pass of the Western European Alps, between the canton of Valais in Switzerland and Aosta province of Italy. Straddling the highest point of the road, the Great St Bernard Hospice was founded in 1049 by Menthon Bernard (later to become St Bernard). The hospice later became famous for its use of St. Bernard dogs in rescue operations.
