Gmunden is an Austrian town, capital of the district of the same name, in Upper Austria. It is located in the region of Salzkammergut on the shores of Lake Traunsee. It is situated next to the lake Traunsee on the Traun River and is surrounded by high mountains, including the Traunstein. Gmunden was granted city status in 1278. The city is known, among other things, as the place of origin of the Gmunden ceramic.
