Australian flag as approved by the King in 1902, see Ausflag The Commonwealth Star has a six instead of seven pointed star. This was changed in 1908. On 3 September, 1901, the new Australian flag flew for the first time atop the Royal Exhibition Building in Melbourne. A simplified version of the competition-winning design was officially approved as the Flag of Australia by King Edward VII in 1902.
