Netherlands, Zeeland Province, Walcheren, village Ritthem [part of the town, city Flushing]: Fort Rammekens at the mouth of the former canal Welzinge, which gave access to the Port of Middelburg, a few kilometers east of Vlissingen on the Westerschelde. Originally, the sea fort WAS called Zeeburg. The fort dates from 1547 and is the oldest surviving sea fort in western Europe, Main task was to protect and control the busy shipping routes to Middelburg and route to Antwerp. Of the original historic building is the monumental entrance gate, left, in a renaissance architectural style of Italian elegance, with sharply stronghold under heavy list.
