The Priory Palace, similar to a medieval Catholic monastery, was built in 1799 by architect N.A. Lvov for the Knights of the Order of Malta. This is the only monument in Russia of earth-building construction of the end of the XVIII century.The Orthodox Emperor Paul I read chivalric novels in his childhood and was interested in the activities of the Sovereign Order of St. John of Jerusalem. After his accession to the throne in 1796, Paul I received the title of protector of the order, and then was elected grand master of this ancient Catholic corporation.
