Taken in Las Grutas, Rio Negro, Argentina during the summer. Associated with fresh and salt water environments, the witch heron is a species distributed throughout South America and part of Central and North America. In Tierra del Fuego it is a permanent resident. It builds its nests in trees near lagoons and watercourses. During the breeding season the males develop two white feathers, which are born in the nape of the neck and extend to the back.During flight, the neck adopts an S shape. They have crepuscular and nocturnal habits, so during the day they remain still among the foliage of trees or bushes.
