The Cathedral Square is the main square of the Italian city of Milan, named after and dominated by Duomo di Milano, dedicated to Santa Maria Nascente (Saint Mary Nascent) and seat of the Archbishop of Milan. The Gothic cathedral took nearly six centuries to complete. It is the fifth largest cathedral in the world and the largest in the Italian state territory. From 1865 to 1873 the piazza was first enlarged and then acquired most of its modern landmarks, including the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II arcade (on the left) and the two Palazzi dei Portici (Portico Palaces) that mark its southern and northern boundaries.
