Homes with a peaked or Gable roof in San Francisco is not uncommon, being one of the characteristics of a Victorian, very common in San Francisco. This home at 31 Alta Street is both the largest and oldest, built 1853. In addition to the two balconies and the downstairs brick wall to give this extra charm, it was the resident, Myrtle Sawvelle, who during Prohibition of the 1920's ran a tea room nightclub in the basement. Because her home made teas were a bit stronger, this caused quite a stir and the nightclub was raided. Myrtle spent three months behind bars for this, and immediately upon her release, she and her husband left the city for good.
