The various types of fungi produce many substances, including enzymes important for the environment, which help to break down organic matter and carry out the recycling of countless materials. These organisms, known as secondary metabolites, are also widely used commercially and operate in the food, pharmaceutical, biological treatment and wastewater treatment industries, among others. It is estimated that the diversity of fungi is over 1.5 million species, reaching 5.1 million; but just over 70,000 have been registered, as countless ecosystems have not yet been adequately studied, and are still under investigation by various experts around the world.
