The Harpy Eagle is one of the world's largest and most powerful birds of prey. Found in tropical central and South America, the Harpy is known for its impressive size, distinctive white tail, and strong talons. The Harpy Eagle's large size is impressive—males can reach up to 4.5 feet tall and weigh up to 9.9 pounds. Its wingspan can reach over 6-7 feet in length. It has a dark gray head and body with a distinctively white tail. Its curved beak and large talons are used to catch and kill prey—typically sloths, monkeys, reptiles, and even large birds. With such powerful talons, the Harpy is capable of taking down large prey with ease. The Harpy Eagle is a powerful symbol of conservation and is considered a near-threatened species due to habitat destruction, poaching, and hunting. Fortunately, conservation efforts have been increasing over the last several years and the Harpy eagle population is slowly rising.
