Fort George was the linchpin of a network of military roads, barracks and forts that were established after the Jacobite uprising in 1746, and was built to subdue the Highlanders. Fort Augustus stood on the far shore of Loch Ness midway down the Great Glen, with Fort William at its southwestern end. Fort George is the only remaining operational fort keeping a garrison to watch over the pesky Highlanders.
