Ford introduced its Thunderbird in 1955 to compete with the Chevrolet Corvette and in the first few years actually outsold the 'Vette. The first engine used was a 292 C.I. V-8 that was borrowed from its Mercury division. The second engine was a 312 C.I. V-8 mated to the Ford-O-Matic three speed automatic transmission. Options included two four barrel Holley carburetors or a Paxton Supercharger that produced 345 H.P.
