Erected after designs by Max Bromme and opened in 1908, this massive stairway forms the entry to the city park which had been created in the wake of Erfurt`s rapid extension since the second half of the 19th century. During World War II, the hill accommodated air raid shelters for up to 2,000 people with entrances on both sides of the stairs that were detonated by the Soviet Red Army in 1946.
