This is a Ford Flathead V-8 engine which was introduced during the gangster era of the 1930's. Supposedly, Clyde Barrow wrote a letter to Henry Ford extolling the value of this motor. It was also popular with the whiskey runners of the era and powered many an early NASCAR racer.
