Fès, also called Fes or Fez is a holy city of Morocco, at 350 m above sea level, at the bottom of a fertile valley, capital of the Fas-Meknas region. The old city is, for its monuments, its markets and its mosques, considered one of the most attractive centers of the whole Islamic world. Fez is divided into New City or Fès el-Jedid, that is the imperial city built starting from 1200, where the station, the Royal Palace and the Jewish quarter are located, and the Old City, or Medina, called Fès el-Bali, the oldest walled part of Fes, a real labyrinth of narrow streets, over 9 thousand, with markets of all kinds, from carpets to brass objects, ceramics to fabrics and leather, and where goods are still transported on donkeys. The city, founded as the capital of the Idrisid dynasty between 789 and 808, is home to the oldest university in the world and reached its peak between 1200 and 1300 when it dismissed Marrakech from the role of capital.
