Stock Photo: Female Brown Basilisk Hidden In The Shadows

ID 263103455 © Ricardnature | Megapixl.com

This is a Basiliscus vittatus lizard species, a young female. Corytophanidae family. Common name: brown basilisk or striped basilisk. The species is native to Mexico, Central America and adjacent northwestern Colombia. The brown basilisk has large hind feet with narrow flaps of skin on the distal edge of each toe. The fact that they move quickly across the water gives them the appearance of "walking on water". Outstanding camouflage. This female basilisk was taking a sun bath, but she noticed me and moved to a dark and shadowy area to hide and protect. Observed near Cerro Cahuí Protected Biotope, Petén department, Guatemala.
