In many species, the bark peels off in long trips, and the fresh bark underneath is a different color. As the fresh bark ages, it dies and the bright green color from the new chlorophyll changes to a dark green, then blue, then purple, then pink, then orange, then brown, and finally a burgundy/maroon color.
