The 16.5 m high and 13 m wide Baroque high altar, created by the wood sculptor Johann Andreas Groeber (1644-1709), was made between 1697 and 1707 and probably erected in place of a large Gothic winged altar in connection with the Counter-Reformation as a sign of the rule of the Archbishop of Mainz over Erfurt.
