Towers at the entrance to the main Temple of Lord Brihadeswara. Beautifully carved images of Gods & Goddesses decorate the Towers or ‘Gopurams’. Commonly known as the Big Temple, the main Temple, not shown in the photograph, is dedicated to the Hindu Deity, Lord Shiva, or Brihadeshwara. The Temple is located in Thanjavur, in the state of Tamilnadu, India. According to the temple inscriptions, it was completed around 1010 AD, during the reign of the Tamil Cholan king, Raja Raja Cholan. It took several years to complete, moving the huge granite blocks, weighing several tons, into place and is a masterpiece of engineering and architecture and is a major tourist attraction now.
