Built on the ruins of a previous fortification by Mughal ruler Akbar, finished in 1573, the Agra Fort, or Red Fort, was the Mughal rulers' home in the North of India. Akbar's grandson later built the Taj Mahal a few miles away from the palace as a mausoleum for his wife Mumtaz.
