Downy woodpecker,smallest in north america,common and widespread. Black wings with white spots and a red patch at top and rear of head. Mixes with other flocks. Feeds mostly on insects especially beetles & ants,also caterpillars and gail wasps. Lays 4-6 eggs,incubation by both sexes.Young leave nest about 3 weeks after hatching.
