Padrao dos Descobrimentos or Discoveries Monument represents a three-sail ship ready to depart. It was built to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the death of Prince Henry the Navigator. He was the great supporter of the so called Age of Discovery, when portuguese navigators started global exploration by sea, in early 15th century.
