Los Barruecos is located just outside Malpartida de Caceres and about 16 km from the city of Caceres and a good place for walkers, birdwatchers. Its name comes from the word barrueco, also berrueco, which is how we call the granitic rocks you can often see in the centre and south of Extremadura. Los Barruecos is a natural area full of those enormous granitic rocks. The Crested Lark, Galerida cristata, is an example of a species which selects habitats which have undergone agricultural intensification. The crested lark is a songbird, singing in flight from high in the sky, at roughly 30 to 60 m above the ground. Francis of Assisi considered the crested lark a bird of special significance, based on similarities he perceived between it and the life of the Friars Minor: its plain earth-coloured plumage and hood, its humility, and its time spent in song.
