Lobster trap buoys are floats that help lobstermen locate their traps on the water surface. They are attached with a rope to the trap. They can be made of PVC or foam. They can have different colors and designs. Lobster trap buoys are used to mark where a fisherman sets his trap or traps. The buoys are attached by rope to the single, pair or triple group of traps on the bottom of the ocean. A bag full of bait is put in each trap dropped from the boat, and it is attached by a rope to a floating buoy to mark its location. Buoys are painted with particular colors that are registered by each lobsterman, which helps identify to whom each trap belongs. Each fisherman has a unique color marking or registration number.
