Burano is an island in the Venetian Lagoon, although like Venice itself it could more correctly be called an archipelago of islands linked by bridges. In the 16th century began women on the island making lace with needles. There are many souvenir shops, like this one, selling lace and venetian masks. The Buranese custom of painting houses in bright colors, a tradition that may have had its origins in the color schemes of local fishing boats, gives the island a cheerful coziness.
