The coconut trees can be considered a very important tree for Sri Lankans. The Coconut is a member of the palm family. Sri Lankans refer to the coconut tree as “Kapruka” meaning that it is an asset for them. Each part of the coconut tree from its roots to leaves is combined with the day-to-day life of the Sri Lankans. Coconuts are used for preparing meals in each home in Sri Lanka. Most of the sweets and curries that are prepared in Sri Lanka use the milk obtained from scraping the coconut. The white, fleshy part of the coconut seed which is called the coconut meat is used in obtaining the coconut milk. The immature leaves of the coconut tree are used in decorations in Sri Lanka. Those immature leaves are called “Gok Athu” and the decorations made by the coconut leaves consist of a dissimilar beauty. Those decorations are mostly used in cultural and religious events. Also, Coconut leaves can be woven to create effective roofing materials. Some houses in Sri Lankan villages use these woven coconut leaves for their roves. Also, coconut leaves can be used in preparing hats and mats. The flower of the coconut tree is considered a sign of prosperity. Also, it is used to extract coconut honey to make a sweet called “Hakuru” and make an alcoholic drink called “Ra”. “Hakuru” is used in preparing sweets majorly.
