The Rockland, Maine breakwater was built in the 1890s by the United States Army Corps of Engineers from locally quarried granite and is over 4,000 feet (1,200 m) long. It shelters ships from coastal Atlantic storms. In 2003, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
