Circles in Tumblagooda sandstone, made by bacterial colonies living in river sand deposited 400 million years ago. The bacteria 'mined' red iron from the sand and concentrated it in a dark centre. The surrounding 'halo' is white because of this iron removal. Kalbarri, Western Australia
