Onion flies have gray bodies and resemble house flies. The male has a longitudinal stripe on the belly which the female doesn't have. The legs are black, the wings are transparent, and the compound eyes are brown. The eggs are white and elongated and are laid in clusters on the shoots, leaves, and tubers of host plants and in nearby soil. The larvae are white and cylindrical in shape and hatch in 3 to 8 days.
