CHAPEL OF SAINT NICHOLAS MEMORIAL OF THE FOUNDERS OF SANTA MARIA IN PORTICO The chapel formerly dedicated to Bishop San Nicola houses some memories related to the holy founders of Santa Maria in Fortico the image of the Mother of God Portus Romanae Securitatis (Safe Port of the Romans) venerated in this area for fifteen centuries. The original icon is kept in the glory of the main altar. The facts of the apparition of the Virgin On 17 July 524, in Rome, in the portico of the house of Santa Galla, daughter of the Prefect Symmachus, a prodigious event occurred, the Virgin Mary appeared in the pantry where the saint kept food for the poor.
