Originally, the island was called Grave Mountain (Mont Tombe). According to legend, the Archangel Michael ordered the Bishop of Avranches St. Aubert to build a church on this rock. The bishop doubted whether he had interpreted the sign correctly, so St. Michael had to appear to the Ober three times.
