This is a Fall picture of a Ceramic Brick Silo located on a modern farm located in Bedford, Iowa in Taylor County. This nod to the history of this farmstead is a local landmark as it is an example of the transition of the history of silos. Prior to the 1890’s small silos were made of wood and susceptible to fires. Ceramic silos would be taller and would be fire proof but very expensive and the ceramic bricks were fragile. Ceramic Brick silos would be replaced by the advent of cement silos, fireproof but cheaper to construct. This picture was taken on September 30, 2017.
