Cayuga Lake is too deep to freeze over in winter, the southern end is much shallower and will often get a coat of ice. Cayuga Lake is the widest and lowest in elevation, 40 miles long and 435 ft deep - the longest Finger Lake! Cayuga was named for the Cayuga Native American Indian tribe. The lake lays on top of the deepest rock-salt mine in North America. Winds can travel down the lake creating high waves in frigid weather.
