Pictured is a carved wooden polychrome statue of Saint Martha in the Church of Saint Martha in Menaggio on Lake Como. In the background is a painting of Saint John of Matha, who with Saint Felix of Velois in the 12th century founded the Order of the Holy Trinity to set Christian slaves free. Martha is a biblical figure described in the Gospels of Luke and John. Together with her siblings Lazarus and Mary of Bethany, she is described as living in the village of Bethany near Jerusalem. She was witness to Jesus resurrecting her brother, Lazarus.
