The Carmo Monastery is a historic building and authentic landmark. The monastery is located between the Chiado and Bairro Alto districts. The 1755 earthquake in Portugal affected many buildings, including this monastery. The Carmo Monastery in Lisbon was founded by the Portuguese knight Nuno Alvares Pereira in 1389. He was the one who led the army to the battle of Aljubarrota. Building the monastery took thirty years.
