First light just hitting Haystack Rock at Cannon Beach, Oregon. This is a nine-mile wide sandy beach, that features Haystack Rock, the third largest coastal monolith in the world, at 235 feet high. Haystack Rock has been designated as a marine and bird sanctuary. The tidepools around the rock have many intertidal animals in them, including limpets, barnacles, starfish, crabs, sea sculpins and anemones. Several bird species nest on the rock in the summer. The most colorful of these is the Tufted Puffin.
