An hour north of Toronto, on the southern shore of Lake Simcoe, is St. George’s Anglican Church. Built in the Gothic style, the church was consecrated and first used for worship on July 24, 1877. The stained-glass windows were hand-painted by the daughters of John Graves Simcoe, the first Lieutenant Governor of Upper Canada. The west roof peak features a Celtic Cross, its circle symbolizing eternity. The church cemetery holds the grave of the “Canadian Mark Twain,” writer and humorist Stephen Leacock.
