San Francisco California Volunteers Monument is a sculpture dedicated to the solders of the Spanish American War,of April through August 1898. Originally located on Van Ness Avenue at Market Street, the location was criticized as it made the statue,a granite base 10 feet (3 meters) tall holding the 16 foot (4.9 meter) tall by 10 foot (3 meter) long bronze sculpture look insignificant. This location,Dolores and Market Streets, was chosen as it really stands out much better. Although the figure riding the horse is supposed to be the ancient Roman Goddess Bellona, the Goddess of War,some people have thought it is Nike, the Greek Goddess of Victory. As seen 16 August 2023.
