The California brown pelicans, Pelecanus occidentalis, is a distinctive bird for the very big beak. This beak can hold as much as three gallons of water and prey.
The main diet for these pelicans are fish, and when they split their meal, they will dive straight down into the water. The deeper the fish is in the water, the higher they will dive from. They hit the water with such force, it stuns the fish, yet, because of special air sacks in the birds bodies, they do not get hurt.
